Summer Reading

Here's the system I've come up with to help encourage my children's reading efforts this summer. Bribery isn't my favorite tool to use, but I am not above it. It works. The kids get rewards at school for reading, so I figure I will reward them at home as well. A couple of my kids really love to read, and a couple...well...not so much. But they do enjoy rewards...

They will receive a money reward for each book they read based on the difficulty of the book, and throughout the summer, when they want to go to a movie with a friend or want a new lego set, or new littlest pet shop, they can redeem their rewards and purchase what they want.

I'll post our list when they are off to school again and evaluate how it worked at the end of summer.

Here's to Happy Summer Reading!

Hey, I'm reading Tom Sawyer right now too. It's really good. :)

I have a summer reading list for my girls too. I'm with you on the bribery thing though, not a fan, but I'll do it.

I LOVE this idea! I think this would work wonders for a certain little 7 year old boy of mine! Thank you, thank you!!

I'm hoping to see you soon too!

Does your local library have a summer reading club? I know that little toys and trinkets aren't the best of bribery... but they're free! And if you're going to be reading and checking out library books anyway...

Judging by the list so far, I would say that Jocelyn and Lily are the ones who like to read :)

I hope that your summer reading program is a success! My girls are signed up for the program over at the library. They are all excited about it and are checking off boxes for every 20 minutes that they read. There is some prize at the end....I am just not sure what it is ( I should pay better attention!)

Happy summer!

I tried that one summer and here's how it worked out: Donald (who liked to read anyway earned money, Heidi who seemed to like the idea of reading just couldn't find the interest to finish even a small chapter book. I don't quite remember Kelly's result, but I do know that if he didn't want to do something there was no way. On the other hand there were times when he enjoyed reading. I guess with him it was a crap shoot.

After a few trips to the library where Kendle just wandered around and didn't pick out any books, I think I will definitely make her up a list of books to read as well. I'm glad I don't have to twist her arm to read, but sometimes I get tired of all of the "book order" books as I like to call them. Hope your kids love their books!

*I saw Ethan at camp yesterday and he was so cute when he came through our class. He is growing up!

Hi! This is my first time commenting on your blog although I have been reading (and listening!) for awhile. Great ideas for reading and thanks for your "Goals for Balance" last week...inspirational.

What a cool idea to get your children to read! I remember being a kid and not feeling too motivated to read. But now, there's nothing I enjoy more than to curl up with a good book. Its crazy how much your interests change!
